Weekly Quercus Updates

This week: Latest Canvas updates, Upcoming Crowdmark maintenance,This Week's Faculty Question: I have noticed that recordings that I have recently uploaded to MyMedia start muted by default and that I need to manually cancel muting each time I view them. Is there something that I can set so as to start them unmuted?  I've uploaded dozens of recordings without this problem before this so I don't know what I'm doing differently. Has there been an update to MyMedia? Perhaps I am doing something when I am uploading?

Latest Canvas updates

The most recent Canvas deploy notes from July 7, 2021 include the following interface changes:

  1. Mark as Done button for Pages

The Mark as Done button for students has been moved to the bottom of the page. If, as part of Module Requirements, students are required read a page and mark it as done, they will now find the Mark as Done button at the bottom of the page (see [2] in screenshot below). This change makes it easier for students to select the button when they reach the bottom of the page. Previously the button appeared at the top of the page (see [1] in screenshot below) and students needed to scroll back up to mark the page as done.

  1. Empty Assignment Description Content

When you create an assignment with no description, the assignment description now displays to students as No additional details were added for this assignment (see [2] in screenshot below). Previously the description displayed as No Content (see [1] in screenshot below). This change is meant to help minimize confusion for students regarding assignment where no description has been added.

Upcoming Crowdmark Maintenance - reminder

If you are using Crowdmark assessments in your current courses, please note that Crowdmark will be unavailable on Sunday July 11, 2021 from 7:00am to 1:00pm EDT for scheduled maintenance.

This Week's Faculty Question

Q: I have noticed that recordings that I have recently uploaded to MyMedia start muted by default and that I need to manually cancel muting each time I view them. Is there something that I can set so as to start them unmuted?  I've uploaded dozens of recordings without this problem before this so I don't know what I'm doing differently. Has there been an update to MyMedia? Perhaps I am doing something when I am uploading?

A: This issue is likely linked to your browser permissions and may occur if you've recently switched browsers or if you've changed your browser settings. For example, if you use Chrome to view your videos in MyMedia, you'll likely notice that they play with the sound on already. However, if you view the same video using Firefox it is likely muted and you need to manually unmute the sound. This occurs because the default auto-play permissions in Chrome are set to 'enabled' and need to be manually disabled while in Firefox they are 'disabled' by default and need to be manually enabled
