EdTech Workshop 2013

This workshop is free of charge to members of the U of T community interested in educational technology. Coffee/snacks and lunch will be provided. A special thank you to our coffee break sponsors, Desire2Learn and eLumen!

What is the EdTech Workshop?

The University of Toronto is at the forefront of new technologies designed to enhance students' learning inside and outside the lecture hall. From webinars and lecture capture to online office hours and e-textbooks, the EdTech Workshop 2013 will showcase leading applications and best practices for innovating teaching and learning, presented by some of the University's leaders in educational technology.

Online Education: Technical and Pedagogical Effectiveness

Our goal is that you will leave this workshop with a better understanding of innovations in teaching technology and resources available at the University of Toronto. The workshop is geared toward educators across U of T, and beyond, who are interested in implementing classroom technology for the first time or are looking to expand their technical toolkit. It may be of special interest for faculty and instructors, teaching assistants and staff members who support or consult on decision-making around EdTech in the learning environment.

Prof. Brett is the Associate Chair for Graduate studies in the Department of Curriculum, Teaching and Learning at OISE. My research and teaching interests in online learning are closely interwoven, and with my colleague Prof Jim Hewitt and our research group, we are using a design research approach to understanding more about what makes for effective online learning environments. PeppeR is our self-developed online platform, and our current research is looking at how to increase virtual presence, online community-building designs and developing new online assessment strategies.

Jennifer Campbell Image Jennifer Campbell is a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Computer Science. With Paul Gries, she has co-taught two MOOCs and has inverted our on-campus introductory programming course. Jen is involved in several projects exploring student experiences in introductory computer science courses and the factors that contribute to success, including the effectiveness of the inverted classroom.

Paul Gries, Senior Lecturer, presents Teaching the World to Program
Paul Gries Image This academic year, Jennifer Campbell and I ran two MOOCs teaching introductory programming. This year, we also inverted our on-campus intro course and are in the midst of doing a study analyzing the effectiveness of this switch. I have a long-term goal of creating a self-paced version of this course.

Steve Joordens Image The 1900 Introductory Psychology class I routinely teach is now my "small" class, at least relative to the 50,000 plus student MOOC that will be ongoing at the time of this conference. My passion is to create and assess tools that support deep learning in any size classroom.
