SoTL Journal Club I: Qualitative Research Paper
The CTSI-SoTL team is offering a noon-hour 2021 SoTL Summer Journal Club Series with a monthly event held in June, July, and August. This programming builds on the SoTL Winter Series (Webinar Recording links) and explores teaching and learning inquiry/research methods addressed in those webinars. The goal of this summer programming is to provide an opportunity for our community to explore the SoTL literature in a synchronous group setting, both to find practical applications to implement in our teaching, and to inform our own SoTL projects.
Articles selected will be a starting point to explore and examine one research approach; these are not meant to be exemplars of SoTL research. We provide discussion prompts to guide and engage us in conversations that will resonate across all disciplines and SoTL experience levels.

Our virtual session will be guided by the 4As Text Protocol (Adapted from Gray, 2005) that will structure our group activity. In advance of the session, please read the article, and jot notes in response to the prompts below, paying attention to both the methods used and the findings of the paper:
- What Assumptions does the author of the text hold?
- What do you Agree about within the text?
- What do you want to Argue within the text?
- What parts of the text do you want to Aspire to (Act upon)?
We also welcome you to discuss the article asynchronously via our SoTL Hub Discussion forum, whether you attend the synchronous session or not. If you would like to participate in that discussion please ensure you are enrolled in the SoTL Hub. Click HERE to enroll.

Session description
Are you interested in learning about teaching and learning funding opportunities available to U of T faculty and staff? If so, you are invited to participate in a 90-minute workshop that provides a general overview of the Learning and Education Advancement Fund (LEAF) and the Instructional Technology Innovation Fund (ITIF). We will describe the opportunities available through these funds and explore effective practices regarding proposal writing for these and other funding opportunities that seek to enrich, catalyze and directly impact University of Toronto teaching and learning. We will discuss general strategies and suggestions for successful grant applications and address the main criteria that these proposals should address.
By the end of this session you will have:
- Gained an understanding of available funding avenues at U of T that support teaching and learning projects and the application processes
- Gained knowledge of the essential elements and key principles guiding effective proposal writing
- Explored grant ideas with U of T colleagues
- Identified key resources to consult for your proposal writing
Community-Engaged Learning Faculty Fellowship Program (CPP)
The Centre for Community Partnerships is currently accepting applications for its Community-Engaged Learning Faculty Fellowship Program (CELFPP). The fellowship recognizes and supports innovative instructors across the University of Toronto who plan to develop new (or enhance existing) Community-Engaged Learning (CEL) and/or Community-Engaged Research (CER) courses.
Application deadline is June 30, 2021.
