WEBINAR TOOLS

Download your Recordings by June 30, 2021!

On June 30, 2021, all recordings made using the Bb Collaborate Webinar tool will be deleted (see the ACT memo regarding Collaborate Recordings). You can download your own recordings (see how to download Bb Collaborate recordings).

How can the EdTech Office help?

You can request downloading support for your course (only instructors can make this request) by submitting the Bb Collaborate Recordings Download service webform (by June 11, 2021). If you have questions about this announcement, please contact the EdTech Office at fase.edtech@utoronto.ca.

QUERCUS

It's time to wrap up your Winter 2021 Courses...

This means its time to archive your course. The best prep for re-using your current course in future terms is to safely save your course and its contents by following our Quercus Course End-of-Term Checklist for Instructors. This 5-step checklist includes end-of-term tasks to ensure sufficient record-keeping and to manage student or TA/course staff access to your Quercus course after the end of the course lifecycle (see the Quercus Course Lifecycle for more timelines).

...and start thinking about your Fall 2021 courses.

Too soon? It's never too soon! While there is a lot still up in the air when we look towards September, there are a few things you can likely do now. And we're here to help! We have a few initiatives coming up over the summer to help ensure that you're prepared for whatever teaching modality September brings.

Teaser Announcement: New module series - Start Strong (launching late July 2021)

We have a new support resource launching over the summer! Join us in (late) July and August as the EdTech Office releases a series of self-directed modules, short demos, and hands-on workshops, designed to get you ready to teach your Fall 2021 courses. On your own time, with scheduled check-ins as preferred (you'll be the driver of your own experience for this series), you'll go from zero Quercus course to hero Quercus course, all in time for the first day of class.

Start Strong will be hosted on Quercus (asynchronously) and Teams (synchronously) and will include synchronous and asynchronous components focused on the following 4 themes:
  • Planning and preparing to teach your course: options for combining asynchronous and synchronous modalities
  • Building and organizing your course: fundamental design elements, adapting a Quercus course template, and content creation (video content, modules & pages)
  • Assessment design: assessment options, feedback strategies, and supporting Academic Integrity
  • Engaging students: communication & support strategies, community-building, and active learning techniques
If you're interested in participating and would like more information as soon as it is released, sign up to participate in the Start Strong series.

Low Effort, Big Impact Tips

Share your preferred name pronunciation - in your own voice!

Record and share it with your students - consider having them record their names, too. If have an discussion board (see how to add a discussion), you could have students record their own names and share to the group. In courses where you hope to foster interaction, this can help students ensure that everyone is being referred to as their preferred name and pronunciation. (This particular (free but you need to create an account) tool is called NameDrop but there are several of this variety to choose from.)

How else can instructors prepare for Fall 2021?

Not interested in a module series? We have more up our sleeves! In addition to our general (anything goes!) consultation (Book a general consult) and video set up and recording sessions (Book an Action! consult), we have two new types of sessions that we'd like to highlight.

1. Group/Departmental/Teaching Team tutorials

Beginning on June 1st, you can schedule a session using our Departmental/Group Tutorial Sign Up form.  These sessions are designed to include your teaching team but would also be helpful to small groups of instructors with similar pedagogical design questions and challenges. We ask for a lead time of a minimum of 2 days in order to prepare your session. These sessions will (typically) include:
  1. Review of pre-session "homework" (e.g. a short survey or reading)
  2. Overview of support available to the FASE community (from the EdTech Office)
  3. General questions - what is top of mind for you and your teaching team?
  4. Experience sharing - what worked /didn’t work for you last term?
  5. Scheduling post-session "next-steps" (including additional tutorial sessions)

2. Student (Re)View Sessions

We have five engineering student Online Learning Assistants this summer (you can meet them!) and they would be happy to offer their thoughts and perspectives on your course as well as their experiences this past year (book a student review session).

This session would be particularly helpful if you'd like to ensure that what you think is clear to your learners is actually clear to them. Where are the sticky spots? What could use a bit more scaffolding? Are you deciding between two options? The co-op students are well positioned to share their thoughts, which you can then implement (or not!) as preferred.

TRAINING & SUPPORT
This week's top EdTech questions

  1. How do I give access to my course after it's ended? When you try to add people, are you seeing that dreaded greyed out "+People" button? If yes, see How do I set a non-default end date on a course? to continue to add people after the "official" end date. This is particularly helpful for deferred exams.
  2. How do I facilitate final exam viewing in Quercus? Have you received final exam viewing requests from your students (communicated via the Office of the Registrar)?  This guide is designed to help you provide students access to any final exams (including comments and feedback) that were written using Quercus Quizzes or Assignments.
  3. How do I download Bb Collaborate Recordings? This guide details how to download recordings of Bb Collaborate sessions by teaching staff from your Quercus course. It is important to download all your recordings (regardless of the tool use) for archival storage as they are not transferred from term to term during a course copy.
  4. Do I need to download my Zoom recordings? Yes! Zoom recordings are saved for 120 days after recording; like Bb Collaborate, you should download any recordings that you'd like to re-use in the future.
  5. Where do I get a UofT Engineering virtual background? On the Engineering website! Download your favourite virtual backgrounds and bring a little bit of U of T Engineering into every meeting.

FASE EDTECH OFFICE SERVICES
How can the EdTech Office help?

Check out our service catalogue to get started:
  1. Book a consultation - We're happy to meet with you to discuss any element of your course (related to technology, of course!). We can help with your Quercus course, planning your online assessments, setting up your home recording station and more!
  2. Request a new Quercus course - We can create courses for both academic and administrative purposes (though you might also consider a Microsoft Team). If you're running a program, committee, group (especially one that has students), this might be a great hub for your work.
  3. Request guest Quercus Accounts - These can be used to provide access to external guests or to be used in testing.
  4. Participate in the Remote Editing Process - We've designed a remote editing process that you allows the Education Technology Office to provide editing services for your self-captured video content. This program will only be offered during the Fall 2020 and Winter 2021 terms.
Looking for 1-1 support? We're happy to schedule individual (or teaching team) consultation(s) to review your course and current stage of design. You can also email us to get started!
