Faculty Question of the Week

Each week we'll use this space to share a question (or more!) that we've received about Quercus and other Academic Toolbox tools. This week's question is: Is the option to 'message students who' available for ungraded surveys?

This Week's Faculty Question

Q:  For a graded quiz, there is a "message students who haven't submitted" feature on Quercus that allows me to send them a reminder. That feature is accessible in the Gradebook. Does this message function also exist for ungraded surveys? These don't appear in the gradebook, so I wouldn't know where to find the message function.

A: The "message students who" feature is handy for providing your students a little nudge. For ungraded assignments, quizzes or surveys, you can access the same feature with New Analytics, using the steps below. Note that New Analytics should be enabled by default in all courses starting with the Winter 2022 term. If it is not enabled in your course, you will need to enable it from Course Settings>Feature Previews (see Enable New Analytics in Your Quercus Course for details).

How to message specific groups of students

  1. Open New Analytics from the right-side menu on your course home page
  2. Select Weekly Online Activity
  3. Select the Message students who icon (envelope)
  4. Select the Didn't Participate option (or whichever option is most appropriate)
  5. In the Resource menu, use the drop-down menu or start typing the survey/assignment title
  6. Expand the number of students identified to see all the names (you can remove any that you don't want to message)
  7. Modify the subject line as desired (by default it will be the same as the Resource you selected)
  8. Type your message
  9. Select Send
