Weekly Quercus Updates

This week: Quercus Assignments Update, This Week's Faculty Question: I am trying to upload lecture video recordings (from last year’s BB Collaborate) to my current course. I created a module for them and managed to upload a few but now I am getting an "Error 400" message for the rest. Does that mean there is some sort of storage problem? Can I get my course storage quota increased so I can upload the rest of my videos?

In this Weekly Update:

  1. Assignment submission type update
  2. This Week's Faculty Question

Assignment submission type update

Thanks to a recent update to Canvas Assignments you can now change the submission type for a Quercus assignment even if you have already received student submissions for the assignment. Prior to this update, if students had already submitted to an assignment, the submission type on the assignment could not be updated. Different options could be selected but they were not retained when the page was saved. Canvas code has been updated to allow updating submission types in an assignment.

NOTES:

  1. This change does not apply to New Quizzes, whose Submission Type always appears as External Tool and cannot be modified.
  2. Group assignment settings cannot be changed once submissions have been received. For example, you cannot make a group assigment into an individual submission assignment and vice versa.
  3. If you change the submission type for an assignment and students have already submitted based on the previous settings, consider allowing multiple submissions so those students can re-submit according to the new submission type.

This Week's Faculty Question

Q: I am trying to upload lecture video recordings (from last year’s BB Collaborate) to my current course. I created a module for them and managed to upload a few but now I am getting an Error 400 message for the rest. Does that mean there is some sort of storage problem? Can I get my course storage quota increased so I can upload the rest of my videos?

A: That definitely sounds like a file storage issue. While Quercus has some capacity to host rich media files (such as videos and images), each course is limited to 3 gigabytes of storage space (not including student submissions). Once the storage capacity has been reached and you try to upload more files, you will receive an error stating "Request Failed with status code 400". Unfortunately, we do not have the ability to increase course quotas beyond the available 3GB. To host large video files in your course we recommend using MS Stream or MyMedia and sharing the play link or embedding the video on a page. For more details on this process, please see our guide: Where should I host my large video files?
