Ouriginal to Turnitin Transition (as of Sept 01, 2024)
The University of Toronto is transitioning its plagiarism detection tool from Ouriginal to Turnitin, effective September 1, 2024. This change is necessary because Turnitin has acquired Ouriginal and will no longer be developing or supporting the Ouriginal platform.
From the Centre for Teaching Support and Innovation (CTSI)'s Plagiarism Detection tool website: For instructors and students, the transition from Ouriginal to Turnitin will not result in significant workflow changes, as both tools are integrated directly with the Canvas Plagiarism Framework in Quercus, which provides a consistent user experience regardless of the plagiarism detection tool. There are no changes to the University’s plagiarism detection tool conditions of use, or syllabus statement (see Terms and Conditions below). Any student papers that were submitted to the Ouriginal platform between 2021 and 2024 will be migrated over to Turnitin’s submission bank, along with all papers submitted to Turnitin prior to the University moving to Ouriginal in 2021.

Some important things to note about this transition:
- Turnitin has now been enabled in all Quercus courses. It will be available alongside Ouriginal until the end of August. As of September 1st, the Ouriginal option will no longer be available.
- If you have used Ouriginal, you will receive an email from CTSI/ARC, notifying you of the September 1st deadline to move to Turnitin.
-
If you have not yet received the email (or if you have never used Ouriginal), you can view the contents of the email on CTSI’s Plagiarism Detection Tool page: Plagiarism Detection - Centre for Teaching Support & Innovation. Please read over the What do you do now? options for important information for those teaching in summer 2024 and fall 2024, especially:
- Any Ouriginal Similarity Reports you wish to save (from current or past assignments) must be downloaded before September 1st. You can find instructions for downloading the reports on the following page: Plagiarism Review – Ouriginal
- If you have Ouriginal assignments where marking will not be complete by September 1st, you must switch them to Turnitin in the assignment settings before students submit their assignments. Refer to CTSI’s Turnitin Tool Guide for instructions.
- To learn more about Turnitin, refer to CTSI’s Turnitin Tool Guide page.
- CTSI will be coordinating a Turnitin faculty session, Plagiarism Detection: Switching from Ouriginal to Turnitin (August 26, 1pm-2pm (online)), as part of August’s Tune Into Teaching Programming.
