Module Overview

Working safely with sharps is a shared responsibility. Knowing what to do in different situations involving sharps can help you prevent and minimize injury to yourself and others as well as reduce the likelihood of infections. 
 
The activities in this module are designed to help you gain the skills and knowledge to confidently and safely approach real-life situations involving sharps. The module includes:
  • realistic scenarios involving sharps for applied learning in a safe environment,
  • videos showing correct procedures for handling and disposing of different types of sharps, and
  • interactive activities and knowledge checks to test your understanding of the concepts covered.

Learning Outcomes

Your main learning goals for this module are to:

  1. Recognize different kinds of sharps and the types of injuries they can cause. 
  2. Review strategies for preventing and reducing risk of sharps injuries (including proper handling and disposal).3
  3. Identify correct procedures for getting treatment, reporting, and following-up on sharps injuries and near-misses.
