Respondus LockDown Browser Now Available in FASE

FASE is adopting a new tool for securing in-person Quercus quizzes.

What is happening?

As of December 2025, the Faculty of Applied Science & Engineering (FASE) has officially enabled Respondus LockDown Browser (LDB) for use in FASE Quercus courses. This means that instructors in our division can now enable LDB in their own courses and settings and use it to support in-person, computer-based quizzes taken on the students' own laptops.

Key requirements

Before using LockDown Browser in a course, please be aware of two key requirements:

  1. LockDown Browser works only with Quercus quizzes.
    • It is compatible with Classic Quizzes and New Quizzes.
    • It cannot be used for assignments, discussions, external tools, or other types of assessments.
  2. A syllabus statement is required.
    • You must inform students in advance if LockDown Browser will be required for any quiz in your course.
    • This statement should include device requirements and expectations for bringing a compatible device.

To support your planning, we’ve assembled the following FAQ that consolidates implementation insights from U of T divisions, common student and instructor concerns, and technical considerations.

For additional information about Respondus LockDown Browser at U of T, refer to the Respondus LockDown Browser guide from the Centre for Teaching Support and Innovation (CTSI). It also includes links to support resources from other U of T divisions using Respondus LBD.

Important: FASE does not use or support Respondus Monitor.

Respondus offers a separate product – Respondus Monitor, a webcam-based remote proctoring tool. Respondus Monitor is not enabled at FASE and is not supported for any course activities. Our implementation includes only Respondus LockDown Browser, which restricts on-device behaviour during in-person quizzes – it does not observe, record, or monitor students in any way.
