Faculty Question of the Week (August 7, 2025)

Faculty Question of the Week (August 7, 2025)

Each week we'll use this space to share a question (or more!) that we've received about Quercus and other Academic Toolbox tools.

This week's question is: If I want to create a lightboard video at the ETO, do I need to learn to write backwards and plan out what I want to write beforehand?

Q: I saw the lightboard in the ETO Studio in one of the ETO Doors Open sessions and I’m interested in using it to create some videos. Do I need to be able to write backwards? Can I write and erase frequently like a blackboard, or should I plan out how I will use the lightboard beforehand?

A: Great questions! You absolutely don’t need to write backwards. Even though the handwriting would appear to be written backwards to the camera, we can digitally flip the footage in post-production to correct it.

We don’t recommend frequent erasing and rewriting, since liquid chalk markers require Windex to clean properly and can leave streaks.

That said, we do recommend planning your content in chunks. Then, if you fill the board, we’ll pause recording, clean it thoroughly, and resume recording so you can cover multiple “boards” worth of content in one session.

For further questions or assistance with creating a lightboard video, please contact the EdTech Office or book a consultation.
