Adapting group projects and software development skills training to online teaching: CIV550 Case Example

The move to online delivery meant that the curriculum for CIV550 Water Resources Engineering needed to undergo substantial restructuring. Throughout the course, a Group Floodplain Mapping project served as a teaching tool that linked Lecture materials all term. Students were introduced to numerous GIS webtools, R (a statistical package), OTTHYMO (a hydrologic modelling program) and HEC-RAS (a hydraulic modelling project) through asynchronous modules and applied these analysis tools to evaluate flood risks to an Ontario community. This presentation will discuss the advantages and challenges encountered executing such an ambitious group project and teaching software remotely.

Discussions can be a great way to engage students in the online environment. They can be flexibly integrated into your course, offering real time (synchronous) or self-directed (asynchronous) opportunities for students to interact with the instructor and with each other, and to explore and reflect on course content. Join us for one or both of our 2-part series on Synchronous (real time) and Ascynchronous (on your own time) discussion tool options.

Part 01 of 02: Facilitating Effective Online Discussions in Quercus: Asynchronous Tools and Techniques

This session aims to support you in incorporating effective asynchronous discussions into your course using various tools in the Academic Toolbox (for example, see the comparison table of different discussion board tools for asynchronous discussion available within the U of T Academic Toolbox: Which tool should I use for asynchronous discussions?).

In this webinar, we will:

  • explore how to use these tools to design discussions that are aligned with your course learning outcomes, content, and activities,
  • review some strategies for facilitating effective discussions that foster student learning and create a more active and engaging course, and
  • provide an overview and feature comparison of the tools that support asynchronous (Piazza, PeppeR, Ed Discussion, and Quercus Discussions). 

Part 02 of 02: Facilitating Effective Online Discussions in Quercus: Synchronous Tools and Techniques

This session aims to support you in incorporating effective synchronous discussions into your course using the tools available in your preferred webinar tool.

In this webinar, we will:

  • explore how to use these tools to design discussions that are aligned with your course learning outcomes, content, and activities,
  • review some strategies for facilitating effective discussions that foster student learning and create a more active and engaging course, and
  • provide an overview of the tools (e.g., breakout rooms, polling) and techniques that support participation.
