Teaching from a Distance Using Office 365 Tools: Webinars and Lecture Recordings

Session description

This webinar is part of CTSI's Office 365 for Teaching and Learning Series. We will explore the differences between asynchronous and synchronous modalities of teaching from a distance. We will review how you can use Microsoft Teams Video Meetings to offer webinars and consider best practices for conducting a synchronous session with your students. We will also provide tips for using Microsoft Stream and/or Microsoft PowerPoint to pre-record lectures and make them available for your students to view in Quercus.

Session outcomes  

  • Distinguish between synchronous and asynchronous teaching
  • Host a webinar on Microsoft Teams Video Meetings to meet synchronously with students
  • Record a lecture using PowerPoint and/or Stream to engage students in an asynchronous learning experience
  • Navigate Quercus and Office 365 support resources

Interpreting Data in Teaching & Learning Studies (Registration restricted to faculty)

Session description

This session is part of the 2021 Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL) webinar series. It provides an overview of interpreting quantitative and qualitative data (with an emphasis on the former), either in your own research or in reading the literature, focusing on what is most relevant for teaching and learning questions. We begin the webinar with the basics of entering, reading, visualizing, and understanding quantitative data. Following this, we demonstrate some common graphing and statistical tools for exploring and understanding quantitative datasets including looking at outliers, reliability, trends, and group comparisons. Finally, we address how to analyse qualitative data on a large scale (e.g., word clouds, content analysis, and the aforementioned analyses), as well as how these types of data can complement one another's findings. This webinar provides tools to both conduct one’s own analyses, as well as evaluate the quality of the analyses in others’ studies.

By the end of this session, you will be able to:

  • Read and interpret basic quantitative data 
  • Understand common methods to visualise and/or analyse quantitative data
  • Apply appropriate data exploration and analysis tools in your research
  • Integrate qualitative data into data analyses
  • Evaluate the quality of analyses used in teaching and learning studies

This webinar is open to instructors seeking introductory level information on data interpretation in teaching and learning studies. Part I is recommended (but not required) for guidance on how to construct surveys and understand the resulting data (see March 18th webinar recording- contact CTSI for access).

Preparing Your Teaching Dossier (Registration restricted to faculty)

Session description

At the University of Toronto, teaching dossiers must be submitted as part of the review process for tenure review or continuing status review. This session will provide an overview of the content and structure of an effective teaching dossier, with an emphasis on how to align this document with divisional and institutional expectations. Session participants will review the distinctive qualities of a teaching dossier, and will develop a plan for assembling and strengthening their own dossiers. They will also be led through the first steps of composing a Statement of Teaching Philosophy. At the end of this interactive session, participants will be able to address the following questions:

  • What is distinctive about my approach to teaching?
  • What have been my major accomplishments as a teacher?
  • How can I effectively present my teaching skills and knowledge to a review committee?

Special note: this webinar will focus on the preparation of a teaching dossier by appointed faculty members for the purposes of undergoing a review process (tenure or continuing status). Teaching dossiers prepared for job searches carry different expectations and will not be the main focus of this session.

Creating Equitable Classrooms (Roundtable): How to support students' academic resilience (CTSI & Academic Success)

Session description

Join staff from Academic Success for a discussion about academic resilience and how to support student learning, as way to create a more equitable classroom. In this session, we will share early insights from our Learning Well program, the Reflect, Connect, and Practice model and how these strategies can be incorporating into classroom teaching.

These informal roundtables offer faculty an opportunity to engage in small group learning about how to create equitable classrooms through:

  • Exploring why they may feel hesitant to bring an equity lens to their curriculum
  • Reflection on their teaching practices and their own social positionality
  • Sharing ideas for how to introduce a topic into their curriculum through an equity lens
  • Workshopping ideas for new assignments together
    Listening to the perspectives of guest speakers

These MS365 courses are brought to you by EASI's new Microsoft 365 Training Centre. They will be conducted in one two-hour instructor-led sessions over Microsoft Teams. The Teams meeting link will be distributed to attendees the day before the session.
