A: My course has one lecture section and multiple tutorial sections, and I’ve cross-listed all the lecture and tutorial sections into one course shell in Quercus. We now have a group assignment, and I would like students to self sign-up for their own groups in Quercus. I’ve enabled the setting to require group members to be in the same section, but I’ve noticed that students from different tutorial sections are still able to join the same group. I suspect this is because they all belong to the same lecture section. How can I manage self sign-up groups in Quercus when my course is cross-listed?
Q: When courses are cross-listed, all students share a common lecture section in Quercus. Even if you enable the setting to “require group members to be in the same section”, Quercus will still treat all students as belonging to that single lecture section. As a result, students from different tutorials can end up in the same self sign-up group.
To keep tutorial group separate, we recommend creating and managing group manually rather than using self sign-up feature in Quercus. You can collect group information using a shared form or spreadsheet, then upload it to Quercus. Below are the quick steps:
- Create a New Group Set in Quercus (with self sign-up disabled)
- Collect group sign-ups externally (e.g. using an MS Form or an editable Excel sheet) and remind students that all members must be from the same tutorial section.
- Upload group membership into Quercus using the CSV template found in the Quercus Import Group feature (see our guide for detailed instructions: Quercus Import Group Feature)
- After you have created the groups in Quercus, if you would like to create group assignments, please refer to the guide: How do I assign an assignment to a course group?
