Q: I seem to have lost my students’ quiz submissions in Quercus. I originally assigned a quiz to everyone, but when a few students missed it, I reopened the quiz just for them. Now I can’t see the responses from most of the class. Is there a way to get those submissions back?
A: Yes, you can get them back – the submissions were not deleted! What likely happened is that when the quiz availability was changed for specific students, access for the rest of the class was unintentionally removed. That makes the recorded submissions temporarily hidden in SpeedGrader.
Restore access to student submissions
To get back the majority of your students’ quiz attempts, you can:
- Go to the Edit page for the affected quizzes.
- Use + Assign To to add another assignment box. In that new box, choose Everybody Else in the Assign To field.
- Add a Due Date and Availability Date (you can set these to the original deadline so students who have already submitted can’t re-submit).
Once the quiz is assigned to everyone again, you will be able to:
- view all submissions in SpeedGrader
- see grades in the Gradebook
For full instructions on assigning Quizzes, refer to the Canvas instructor guide: Assign Quiz and Dates
Tips for future assessments
When providing accommodations for individual students:
- Do not edit or remove the first Assign To box.
- Instead, add an additional Assign To box for students who need accommodations (i.e., extended time or a different availability window).
NOTE: Removing or changing the original assignment box un-assigns the quiz for the rest of the class and hides their submissions in SpeedGrader. For more details, see this guide from our colleagues at UTM: Accommodations in Quercus.
